BTV Kidical Mass 2015: Here's the plan!

I've been thinking a bit lately about how to make Kidical Mass rides in Burlington more consistent, more organic, and more frequent. As informal as things have been in the past, I think the answer is to make things even MORE informal! So here's the idea:

Saturday Rides- 2:00 by the Bell in City Hall Park
The current (Summer 2015) plan is to meet up with like-minded families to ride at 2:00 PM on Saturdays by the bell in City Hall Park, as the farmers' market is closing down, and to ride from there. If it's a younger crowd that will be more comfortable on the bike path, the group can opt to walk bikes about a third of a mile down College Street to start the ride from there. If it's a more advanced group or if the younger members are generally in trailers or on tandems etc, we can be more street-oriented. Popular destinations are likely to be parks and playgrounds along the path or in other parts of the city.

Special Rides
A secondary goal is to branch out from this baseline ride series with other rides for special events that may occur at other times of the day or month. (overnight camping rides, partnering up with other rides like the Halloween Ride in Burlington, special trips to try out other riding areas in the region, etc.)

My son and I may or may not show up for all of these regular rides. If we do, look for us on our tandem:
Two generations, one bike.

But if we don't and people want to be able to identify each other, just shoot me a message and I'll send you a handful of "spoke cards" (Business cards, really) to stick in your wheels and you can find one another!
Like so.

See you out there,

Matt

Kidical Mass Ride: Sunday, August 3, 11:00AM at Maglianero

What's the first Sunday in August? August 3rd, coming right up!

I was so impressed when last time around, a new family joined us and one of their little guys did the whole ride from Maglianero to North Beach on his balance bike. Well, between that ride and now, my OWN little guy has transitioned from his balance bike to a pedal bike, and on his first day out, he completed a ride of two miles!

So yeah, Austen wants to bring his pedal bike downtown and go for a ride. Come join us.

Ride distance, destination, etc. TBD by consensus of the group. But I know one little guy who likes thos playgrounds!

Next ride: Sunday, July 6, 10:30 at Maglianero, roll out by 11:00!

...and as always, ride distance, route, destination, etc will be decided by consensus of the group! Come on down!

We had a nice little ride last weekend, with two big people and three little people, but we want to get bigger. Yes, yes, I know July 6 is the weekend of the 4th. So what, you'll be all fireworked and picniced out by Sunday morning anyway. Come grab a beverage at Mag and then let's go for a ride!

New Plan: Kidical Mass Rides: First Sundays, 11:00, Maglianero, pass it on.

Hey everybody-

So, I ended up with an under-the weather little guy on Sunday and couldn't make it out to ride. I don't think anybody showed up, but given my total non-publicity of the ride, that was a pretty likely outcome.

I've been thinking a bunch about how to make Kidical Mass happen. I think it's a great idea whose time has come in Burlington. I think it's such a great idea that I can't believe it isn't already happening in some big way here, but I'm willing to keep the blog and social media accounts going as long as I am able to get it off the ground. I am also happy to give others who are interested the ability to post to the blog or social media accounts, so let me know if that's of interest.

In the meantime, let's call it this way:

Burlington, Vermont Kidical Mass
Informal group bicycle rides with kids. Get together for an all-ages group bicycle ride in Burlington! The speed will be slow and friendly.  Meets the first Sunday of every month at Maglianero on Maple Street and rolls out by 11:00. The route and duration of the ride will be decided by the consensus of the group. More information at www.btvkidicalmass.blogspot.com

Short and sweet. I'm going to send out a request that folks post this copy on their local Front Porch Forums and anywhere else they can think of.

See you out there,

Matt

This just in! Let's ride bikes next weekend!

So, I think this whole Kidical Mass thing is a pretty good idea, don't you?

Good.

How about next weekend we get to gather and go for a ride?

Nothing crazy.

Let's get together Sunday morning at Maglianero around 10:00 and leave for a little ride around 10:30. Just a bike path thing, distance and destination at the whim of the group in attendance.

See you there,

Matt and Austen

Think Spring!

Hey everybody!

I am very much interested in continuing Kidical Mass in Burlington, but I need your help tapping into larger groups of parents and kids who are interested in getting together to ride bikes. Please, if you know families who would be interested in riding together, point them to this page or the Facebook or twitter page, and let's all get together to ride soon!

Hi there! Let's ride again on July 13th!

Hi Everybody!

You might be seeing this post because in the last few days or weeks, I handed you a business card with our blog address on it. If so, welcome! You can find a lot about Kidical Mass in general and BTV Kidical Mass by clicking over to the "About Us" tab and feel free to ask any questions you have there or in the comments on this post.

We've been setting the regular rides up for the first Saturdays of the month, but the first Saturday in July falls on the weekend of the Independence Day holiday and I imagine many people will be traveling or will have their own plans that may not jive well with fitting in a group ride on a Saturday morning.

So, let's get back to it on July 13th!

What about a ride that ends up downtown, at Phoenix Books? Just in time for story time and to browse their wares?

Let's do it!

Meet at 9:30 by the circle in front of Echo for a leisurely cruise along the bike path (an out and back to North Beach perhaps?) and then we'll scoot up the hill for story time at 11!

See you there,

Matt
